Our Story

Nelson Tours and Travel is 110% kiwi owned and operated by husband and wife team Helen & CJ Power (yes POWER is the family name)!!  Creative  freelance guiding in the top of the South Island is CJ’s passion. With 10 years experience in local tourism and many friends in the industry you are guaranteed an experience like no other.  CJ’s hobbies include making fruit wine and REAL WINE at home and tasting them, playing guitar with his next door neighbour and playing basketball both socially and competitively in the NBA (Nelson Basketball Association) still hoping one day he will get the call to play in the big league.

CJ a keen traveller began his tourism training at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) in 2004 in the Diploma of Adventure Tourism where he learned the art of tour guiding, after that CJ worked as a ski field shuttle driver, skydive assistant ground crew/driver, paintball instructor, quad bike guide and in vineyards working side by side with winery owners and harvest people gaining knowledge of the wine industry. Through interpretation and together with his friendly, relaxed and energetic outgoing nature CJ can offer a very entertaining and fun experience exploring the top of the South Island.

Helen holds a Diploma in Tourism Management and has seven years’ experience in the tourism industry, including four years as a Travel Consultant at the Nelson i-Site Visitor Information Centre.  She is now embarking on a new career as a Naturopath and assists CJ in managing the business.

We are proud to be Qualmark approved and have an environmental rating of Bronze. We have donated to The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary over the years and have a fence post plaque in zone 1 of the sanctuary.  Also all of our brochures are printed on Eco 120 recycled paper. We recycle and educate our visitors on the importance of being a “tidy Kiwi”. We sometimes visit organic vineyards and discuss the process these operators need to go through to achieve their organic status.

CJ is also registered with a level 2 first aid certificate and carries a full first aid kit in the vehicle.
